NYC Nights – 5x the Fun!

NYC Nights – 5x the Fun!

Living in NYC certainly comes with it’s share of headaches, but there are also a ton of advantages to being in the city that never sleeps.  Capital One Bank has challenged Reality TV Fashion to highlight five fun spots that I love in my city.  Though I’m not exactly a native (like my Queens-bred husband) I’m here going on 12 years strong so at this point I know a little something about this town.  The beauty of this city is that you can live here for years and still discover some place new to kick it each weekend.  So whether you’re in the city for only a weekend, or born and raised here, below are my recommendations for having 5x the fun in the Big Apple.

1) I’ve mentioned Ricardo’s Bar & Grill on a few occasions as it’s a popular venue for date night with your boo as well as your special celebrations.  This is me and the hubs’ “go to” spot when we’re looking and feeling great and want to be seen!  Located in my neck of the woods (Harlem), the Latin American steakhouse boasts yummy food, good service, and terrific drinks. Though the music is pumping and the restaurant bustling with Harlem socialites, the arrangement of the seating creates an intimate dining experience in which you can savor a drink and enjoy good conversation.  You can also opt to reserve a space for your own private event, as “Basketball Wives L.A.’s” Draya Michele did when she celebrated her 27th birthday at Ricardo’s last year.

2) Native Restaurant is a trendy little spot that draws a diverse and eclectic crowd.  It’s a quiet little gem, also located in Harlem, that features some of the best soul food I’ve ever tasted (and my family is from South Carolina so that’s saying something!) The owner is a delight, the mixed drinks are strong, and their mac and cheese is the bomb!  The atmosphere at Native’s is fun yet low-key and chill, and sometimes you’re looking for that from a night on the town.

3) During New York Fashion Week I found myself at a new venue not once, but twice, in the same week.  Suite 55 in Midtown Manhattan is a deluxe hookah lounge that features a downstairs restaurant/lounge with upstairs lounge and dance floor. The ambiance is chic and cozy and I dig that.  I first visited the lounge on Fashion’s Night Out and just last night I was invited to Laura and Gloria Govan’s “Basketball Wives L.A.’s” private viewing party.  If you enjoy a fabulous little night on the town while also rubbing elbows with a few celebs this is a cool place to be because the food is good, the spirits are flowing, and you never know who might walk through those doors at any given time.

4) On my husband’s last birthday in May we found ourselves at Clyde Frazier’s Wine & Dine Restaurant on the Upper West Side. Though this is definitely a “guy’s spot” (complete with a sports bar and lounge), it’s also an upscale and trendy eatery that I was able to enjoy as well.  The food is the bomb, albeit a bit on the pricey side, but the trade-off is that you may get lucky one evening and bump into Walt “Clyde” Frazier himself.  Imagine our delight when we found ourselves seated just a table away from the man himself, and my birthday guy ended up talking sports and the play-offs with the basketball legend himself.  He even scored himself a photo, which just about made his birthday!

5) Sometimes you just want to keep the night mellow and chill.  When we get in that mood we hit up Showman’s Jazz Club.  The crowd is a little older (40s +) but the live performances and good mixed drinks at the bar (only $5-8 each) make it one of Harlem’s best jazz spots.  I’m not as into jazz as my husband is, but even I can’t help but to close my eyes and lose myself in the music those cool cats are playing.  Located right on 125th Street, Showman’s is definitely a “must” visit if you’re in town for a few days.
