This evening I attended the Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure Launch Event hosted by Amar’e Stoudamire and had a chance to chat with the NBA champion and fashionisto on the blue carpet about his new collaboration with designer Rachel Roy. The Rachel Roy + Amar’e Stoudemire collection is a clothing line for women that features an athletic, “tomboy” style fused with touches of femininity, designed especially for the lady who likes to keep it cute while she’s casual.

After chatting with Amar’e it became obvious that, not only does the guy love fashion, he takes it very seriously. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that he enjoys watching the Fashion Channel in his free time (as he likes hearing about the seasons “must-haves”).  When he’s off the court, some of his favorite designers include Tom Ford and Salvatore Ferragamo. Read on for more of what Amar’e had to say:

Style Me Prissy: Amar’e, we are so excited about the Rachel Roy + Amar’e Stoudemire collection! Can you tell us about what’s in stores now and what we can expect to see?

Amar’e: Lots of casual looks! Right now a lot of the pieces have “New York” or “Knicks” on them, but we’ll be adding Chicago Bulls and Lakers tees very soon.  Some of the tees have corset-style lace-up sides, others lace up the front.. so it’s kind of tomboy meets sexy. It’s important to me that the line reflects a little swagger (laughs), but I want the ladies to be comfortable with what they’re wearing. That’s the whole point of it.

Style Me Prissy: Well that sounds interesting! I bet that corset-detailing is pretty. Oh, and I agree… comfort is important! I think too often that’s under-rated (laughs). So tell us, what inspired the collection?

Amar’e: We were both inspired by the energy and the fans. It’s for the ladies who go out to the game, or watch it at home with their man (laughs), and want to be casual but still be on trend.  So you’ll see a lot of athletic-inspired pieces in colors like heather gray, but with pops of orange or blue accents – since those are our colors. You’ll see leather and denim jackets, sweatpants, t-shirts with basketball logos, a few with my number (1)… it’s hot.  It’s real hot. I’m proud of it. My favorite piece is the jean jacket. Those are really coming back in style now.

Style Me Prissy: Yeah, I rock my jean jacket every chance I get. So… there are rumors about you moving into designing for the guys as well?  Can you tell us about that?

Amar’e : I would like to see something like that happen. (laughs) I can’t speak too much on it right now. But it’s going to be something nice — something different from what we’re doing here. Ya’ll just have to look out for that.

So there you have it! The Rachel Roy + Amar’e Stoudemire collection is in stores now and affordably priced between $49 and $229. I took a peek at some of the pieces online and, while the clothes really aren’t my style, they are cute and with names like Rachel Roy and Amar’e attached, I could see them selling out quickly.

What do you think?
