Fashion’s Night Out at Destination Maternity With Laila Ali

Fashion’s Night Out at Destination Maternity With Laila Ali

As we continue with our coverage of Mercedez-Benz New York Fashion Week I spent my evening on the pink carpet for Vogue’s 2011 Fashion’s Night Out at Destination Maternity. The event was hosted by athlete and champion of health and beauty Laila Ali.  Laila, along with eight other celebs, has created a maternity denim look for an online auction to support the March of Dimes.  The denim was on display at the event and, throughout the evening, guests were able to bid on jeans from their favorite celeb. Is there anything more fabulous than a party for a great cause?!

For the second night in a row I rocked fashion from the Kardashian Kollection.  I opted for the Tattoo Print Dress in black and white.  The mini-dress features a split neckline, half sleeves, and front tattoo print with contrast panels. I paired the dress with green ankle wrap sandals and the Stella & Dot Panther Pendant Necklace that I was gifted at the NYFW Pampering Event With Glam & Qream Liqueur yesterday.

It was fun chatting with Laila on the red carpet.  She is even more gorgeous and lovely in person than she appears on TV and omg, her SKIN is so flawless.  Here’s an excerpt from our interview:

Style Me Prissy: Laila, you look amazing – as always!  Who are you wearing tonight?

Laila Ali: I’m actually wearing a dress from here!  It’s the Sleeveless Embellished Maternity Dress from A Pea in the Pod Collection.  They [Destination Maternity] gave it to me and they took it in for me. My shoes are Stuart Weitzman.

Style Me Prissy: I love that! It goes to show that we can still rock some of our maternity clothes even post-baby. Fabulous! Laila, who is your favorite designer or clothing line in general?

Laila Ali: Well, I would really describe my style as relaxed.  Designer… that’s a hard one for me (laughs). When I’m going to a special event I like Armani.  But in general, I’m not really into designers – I see what I like and just buy it.  I love to shop at Nordstroms.  But I hate to pay top dollar for a dress that I’m going to wear only one time for an event.

Style Me Prissy: I agree with you Laila! That’s one reason I like to shop vintage!

Laila Ali: Yes! Me too (laughs).

Style Me Prissy: Laila, can you tell us what the inspiration was behind your designer denim for the Destination Maternity and March of Dimes online auction?

Laila Ali: Well, I had lots of different ideas for designs.  But in the end, I went with a look that was simple, current, and something that I felt most women would actually want to wear!

Style Me Prissy: Well, your design is super cute.  Almost makes me want to be pregnant again just so I can bid on those jeans. (laughs). Okay, not really.

Laila Ali: (laughs) I know what you mean!

Style Me Prissy: Laila, every time I see you on the red carpet or making an appearance somewhere, you look so beautiful, feminine, and glamorous. Yet, you play one of the roughest contact sports and, in the ring you’re so intense and, in fact, undefeated!  Outside the ring would you describe yourself as a girly girl, a tomboy, or somewhere in between?

Laila Ali: Hmmm, well I wouldn’t call myself a tomboy but I’m not a girly girl either. I think somewhere in between. In the ring, I’m focused on the fight – taking that person out! (laughs) But out of the ring I’m a lady. So I don’t really have to try at it. It comes naturally.

Style Me Prissy: Shifting gears here… how are you finding the balance of motherhood/work?

Laila Ali: You know, you really just have to work it out for yourself. It’s hard. Something is going to be sacrificed. You really just have to figure out how to work it out…

Style Me Prissy: Oh, I agree with you! It’s all about finding the right balance, and that can be a challenge sometimes. Laila, are there any upcoming projects we should be on the look out for?

Laila Ali: I have a hair care and skin care line called Laila Ali Professional Hair Care and Laila Ali Derm Essentials that is available now at Walmart, Target, and Sears.  You can find out more at LailaAli.com.

(Full interview to be posted at PrissyReviews.com)

After chatting with press, for the remainder of the evening, Laila engaged expectant moms and discussed her fashion choices, as well as her own style and tips on health and beauty throughout her pregnancy and post-partum.  Also in attendance at the event was Nicole Sullivan, actress and comedian best known for her work on MADtv and “King of Queens.” I interviewed her as well and she was sweet, charming, and very funny!  Other celebrities participating in the celebrity denim auction were on hand to celebrate the evening activities as well.  Pre-natal yoga instructor, Latham Thomas, discussed the importance of exercise during pregnancy, and Mama Mio representatives and Edamame Spa technicians offered hand and chair massages throughout the evening.

Eight other celebrities, including Heidi Klum, Naomi Watts, Jewel, Camila Alves, Busy Philipps, Diane Farr, Kaitlin Olson, and Nicole Sullivan, each embellished their own one-of-a-kind pair of designer maternity denim, as part of this initiative to raise awareness about the importance of preventing preterm birth so more babies can get a healthy start in life.

After my interviews I sat down to relax and enjoy a cocktail (or two) while I thought about whether or not I should attend another FNO event, or head on home and catch up on blog posts! Just as I had decided to leave and head on home I ran into another one of my favorite style bloggers Nichelle Pace of StyleMom.  Loved her casual-chic look for the evening! I’m so glad I stayed for those extra few minutes to figure out my next move, or I’d have missed Nichelle.

I made a couple of new friends as well, which is always fun! Selena Hill (online editor) and Keith Moore (production manager) of NV Magazine were in attendance. It was fun chatting with them while we waited for our interviews.

Hope you got into something equally fun and fabulous for FNO!  Muchas Smoochas!
